Job Title: Science Curriculum Writer: TEKS Resource System (Contract Position)


Reports To:
TEKS Resource System Science Content Coordinator

Salary:
$10,000 per grade-level contract


Primary Purpose:

Work independently under the supervision of the TEKS Resource System Science Coordinator (and/or Science Specialist) to develop Science curriculum for the newly-adopted Science standards. This includes creating and writing original drafts of the following components for a specific grade level(s):
  • TEKS Clarification/Vertical Alignment Document (breakout and specificity of standards)
  • Year at a Glance (bundled and sequenced standards)
  • Instructional Focus Documents (overview of each unit, performance assessments and rubrics, overarching and unit understandings/questions/concepts, vocabulary, misconceptions, etc.)

Education/Certification:
  • Texas Teacher Certification in Science (required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or Science related field (required)
  • Master's degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment or Science related field (preferred)

Experience:
  • Five years Science classroom teaching experience (required)
  • Experience with curriculum design/writing (preferred)
  • Familiarity with TEKS Resource System components (preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Comprehensive and specific grade-level knowledge (e.g., pedagogy, developmental appropriateness, appropriate assessments, etc.)
  • In-depth knowledge of grade-level Science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum design
  • Current knowledge of curriculum trends
  • Exceptionally strong command of the English language including conventions of grammar and mechanics with strong revising and editing skills
  • Knowledge of applicable copyright and fair use regulations for commercial educational products
  • Skills in Microsoft Office Suite (required) and other cloud-based technologies such as SharePoint, OneDrive, and Google Drive (preferred)

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a representative of ESC Region 13, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration and discretion in all interactions with other members of the educational community and with the public
  • Create and write original drafts of the TEKS Resource System curriculum components
  • Collaborate and clearly communicate progress regarding development efforts including timelines, areas of concern, and potential solutions to the Science Coordinator and/or Specialists
  • Receive and respond to constructive feedback with integrity and professionalism
  • Revise and edit all submissions with strong attention to detail
  • Reliably meet deadlines and deliver quality products
  • Attend, as necessary, all meetings/trainings which may be delivered in-person, online/video, and/or by phone
  • Work productively in a virtual environment with reliance on video conferencing, email, and phone as primary forms of communication
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Equipment Needed (supplied by contractor):
  • Computer with speaker and microphone (or a headset with microphone)
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Software for virtual meeting capabilities

Work Setting:
  • Remote work, not at ESC Region 13

Working Conditions

Physical Demands:
  • Periodic overnight travel may be required to ESC Region 13 in Austin, TX
  • Hearing, speaking, visual acuity
Mental Demands:
  • Adherence to and flexibility with required deadlines
  • Maintain emotional control
Environmental:
  • Ability to sit at a desk and/or work on computer for prolonged periods
