Workshop description

All of us who teach reading to students know that many of our students struggle with comprehension as evidenced on the STAAR and NAEP reading assessments. Forty years of research into the science of reading shows us that word recognition is the foundation of reading; all other processes are dependent on it. (Snowling & Hulme, 2011). If your students don't understand the basic structure of words, remembering what they read will be difficult if not impossible.

Join us for an interactive workshop where you'll learn strategies for teaching the 5 research-based elements of reading instruction: phonics (decoding), phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Two ESC Region 13 reading specialists, including one with dyslexia expertise, will facilitate your learning of methods to teach your students reading skills including an explicit way to break down words into morphemes for phonemic awareness and fluency.

You'll walk away with a set of instructional tools to allow you to know how to teach the essential components of reading. Your students will improve their reading comprehension by understanding how to dissect and map words as part of an integrated reading process.
