Teaching for Transfer in the Biliteracy Classroom

  • ESC Region 13

A unique component of biliteracy instruction is the concept of Teaching for Transfer. As Beeman and Urow explain in their book, Teaching for Biliteracy (2013), Teaching for Transfer is based on the idea that biliteracy teachers must plan not only for the instruction their emergent bilingual students need in Spanish and English, but they must avoid reteaching concepts that can be transferred from one language to the other. We know that very few resources present this idea and it is our intention to support teachers in:

  • Understanding what are Bridge Lessons
  • Applying this concept to the content of their grade level TEKS
  • Developing a Bridge Lesson Plan

In this interactive 6-hour course, participants will learn about bilingual brain development, best practices to support biliteracy, and simple ways to support cross-linguistic connections.
