The Emotional Disturbance (ED) classification within Special Education can provide students with access to critical services, accommodations, and supports. At the same time, the label can carry stigma, misunderstanding, and unintended consequences that affect students, families, and school systems both in the present and beyond the school setting.
This reflective, discussion-based workshop invites parents, school counselors, social workers, educators, administrators, and special education professionals to examine the complexities of the ED classification and its impact on student experiences. Participants will explore how the label is defined and applied in educational settings while engaging in meaningful conversations about identity, access, bias, language, school culture, and long-term student outcomes.
Through guided reflection and collaborative discussion, attendees will consider both the benefits and concerns associated with the ED label, including how systems respond to emotional and behavioral needs. The session encourages participants to examine personal perspectives and professional practices while identifying ways to advocate for equitable, strengths-based, and student-centered approaches within Special Education.
