Sessions
A bot & a hard place: Writing Instruction in the age ChatGPT
Adam Sparks Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have created a tricky balance in writing-rich curricula: We have to prepare students for the future by teaching them to use these tools effectively while also developing students’ ability to write independently. In this session, we’ll cover 5 tips that will help you balance these two (seemingly opposed) demands. This will include policies, strategies, and tools for almost any classroom. The session will be most relevant to humanities teachers, but helpful for any teacher or admin struggling to balance AI’s influence on student learning.
Outcomes:
Understanding AI: Educators gain a foundational understanding of AI, enabling them to explain its basic mechanics and what it can & can’t do.
Practical Integration Strategies: Educators develop actionable classroom policies to effectively integrate AI into their teaching practices.
Tool Acquisition: Educators experience a variety of curated AI tools to implement the workshop framework, including Short Answer, and learn how to use AI safely and effectively with students.
Can AI close the achievement gap?
Adam Sparks Students lost anywhere from 1/2 a year to 1.5 years (!!) of learning as a result of the pandemic. Acknowledging that we probably can’t cover 150% of a typical year's worth of material multiple years in a row…where do we go from here?
AI is certainly not a silver bullet, but it can play an important role in closing these gaps by enabling teachers to be more efficient outside the classroom and effective inside of it. Focusing on areas with some of the highest effect sizes on student achievement, this session demos new approaches and tools to help teachers improve direct instruction, better differentiate learning materials, and embed literacy practice across the curriculum.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to use at least one new strategy or tool to help them better conduct direct instruction, differentiate instructional materials, and/or embed literacy practice in their classroom.
