Lit Kit Launch: Lending Libraries with Adapted Books and Toys for Inclusive Learning

  • Austin (Main Campus)
  • 6 CPE Credits
  • $55

Not all toys are accessible to all children, Switched-On Learning wants to fix that! By adapting internal switches for electronic toys to a larger external switch, simple toys can become learning tools that can be manipulated by any of our students with speech-language, cognitive, or physical disabilities. Each toy will become an engaging, fun, interactive learning tool that will increase communication and emergent literacy skills.

This course will review how to start a library of literacy kits containing switch adapted toys and manipulatives with a focus on communication. You will be introduced to tips and tricks to bring this program to your district. Information on overcoming barriers, securing funding, recruiting staff to help, and more will be covered in the morning session. We will learn how to adapt toys in the afternoon with a hands-on make and take. Each participant will leave with 3 Lit Kits in backpacks containing accessible instructional materials including items such as a switch adapted toy and theme related book, as well as digital and DIY literacy resources with an emphasis on core vocabulary.
