What are RBIS?

  • A set of research-based practices that highlight common misconceptions in the field.
  • Topics that require conceptual or philosophical changes in approach to instruction.
  • A set of practices that are supported by research and should be present in classrooms, regardless of instructional materials.
  • A set of practices that relate directly to the design of instructional materials AND/OR the approach required to implement them well.

The essential best practices in mathematics instruction are content-specific practices that are supported by research and should be present in classrooms regardless of instructional materials. In mathematics, there are four RBIS that have been identified: Balance of Procedural and Conceptual, Depth of Key Concepts, Coherence of Key Concepts, and Productive Struggle. Research shows that these four strategies are effective for all learners. This is the foundation of strong instruction.
