Texas Principal Evaluation and Support System (T-PESS) is the Commissioner recommended principal evaluation system for the state of Texas. This system assesses the principal’s performance in relation to the Texas Principal Standards.
The principal takes the lead in conducting the evaluation through the use of self-assessment, reflection, and input gathered from various stakeholders with an interest in the leadership of the school. This information provides a basis for goal setting and future professional development for the principal.
We provide T-PESS trainings throughout the year for anyone who appraises principals. Principals are also encouraged to attend these trainings to deepen their understanding of the appraisal process.
In the summer of 2020 an updated T-PESS rubric was rolled out by TEA. For the 2020-2021 academic year, current appraisers can use either the original rubric or, after attending the 1/2 day update at no cost, appraisers are able to use the updated T-PESS rubric to complete appraisals. This choice of rubric should be a district-wide decision.
Beginning in 2021-2022, the updated rubric will become the only Commissioner recommended principal evaluation instrument and the original rubric will no longer be available. The 1/2 day T-PESS Rubric update trainings are available only to those who have completed the appraisal training previously. New appraisers should complete the full day appraiser training before appraising principals with the instrument.
The updated rubric aligns with the Effective School Framework, Texas Principal Standards, Texas Instructional Leadership and T-TESS processes. Additionally, as a resource a rubric is available for Assistant Principal appraisal, You can find this at TPESS.org under the Resource tab.
